All New Excerpt of Nora’s Soul

February 15, 2009 on 10:57 am | In writing | No Comments

“You don’t have to walk me home,” she said, peevish, pulling away from him.
“I said…give me your key.”
“I can open my own door.”
“Give me the damn key!”
Reluctant, she handed it over with a muttered, “I’m not drunk, you know.” She didn’t pursue the subject as he shot her a quelling look, but she refused to let his boorish attitude unnerve her. Instead, she said, flippant, “And if this is your sorry attempt to be a gentleman…” She didn’t finish as he sent another dangerous look her way. Maybe it‘d be better if she just held her tongue until she was safely inside her apartment, she decided.
Neither one of them acknowledged the picture of the angel that fluttered to the floor when he pushed open the door.
“Okay, then, you can handle it from here.”
“Oh, good, you’re finally going.” Her tone was dry, devoid of emotion, but her eyes shot bolts of fire in the dark. “I feel so much safer now that you saw me inside.”
“Bitterness doesn’t become you, Nora.”
“I’m not bitter, I’m tired,” she said. “But you’re too pig-headed to see that. See me in a bar with a drink and you automatically think I’m drunk. Well, I’m not! I’m tired. T-I-R-E-D!”
“Are you always this bitchy when you’re tired?”
Nora glared at him, but didn’t snap at his bait; she had to bite down on her lower lip to keep from doing so. Instead, she decided to just get him out of there so she could have some peace in which to deal with the painful noise roaring in her head. “Weren’t you leaving?” she demanded, her voice snapping like a brittle twig. “Well, go, then!”
He was at the door, ready to do just that, when she called, “Wait!” She followed him into the small stream of light cast by her porch lamp. Her eyes narrowed, suspicion clear in their murky depths. “Why’d you go there tonight? Checking up on me?”
“Just wanted a drink.”
“In that bar?”
“Yeah, in that bar. I used to go there all the time…before Denise.”
“Oh.” She nodded again, half-turned away as she struggled out of her jacket; pictures of angels fell from the pockets as she carelessly tossed it over the back of the sofa. “Well, okay, then.”
“Okay,” he echoed softly. Still, he hesitated at the door. He stood pressed against it, arms folded over his chest, just watching her. Why?
Before she realized what he was doing, Kyle was across the room to her, pulling her against him. Clasping a hand to the base of her neck to anchor her for a thorough, passionate kiss. Nora barely had time to react as his lips devoured hers, manipulated hers, forced them open to receive his tongue. When at last he relinquished her lips, she was breathless.
“What’d you do that for?” she managed to whisper, her eyes fluttering open to regard him.
“I don’t know, it just seemed…right. This seems right.” He lowered his head to kiss her again.
Nora just stood there, numb, as Kyle’s lips mapped an assault on her own. With each kiss, she started to respond, her lips following his with each retreat. Her eyes, closing in desire, fluttered open in question when his mouth disappeared from hers. She watched as Kyle shucked out of his jacket and shirt, casually dropping them to the living room floor.
Oh, my God! This was actually happening. She wasn’t imagining it this time. Kyle was going to make love to her! He was actually standing in her living room, bare-chested – oh! What a beautiful chest he had – backing her into the darkness of her apartment. She felt the warmth and strength of his chest pressing against hers and knew it wasn’t a dream. After all these years, he was with her again.
Nora pretended to pull away as they paused in the space between the folding screens that separated her bedroom from the rest of the apartment. Yet, her lips never strayed from Kyle’s. She was afraid to release them; afraid that, if she did, her dream would end and she’d find herself alone in bed. She moved her hips away from Kyle’s. With a growl, he looped an arm about her hips and pulled them close, cradled them in the basin of his pelvic bones.
“You’re making me crazy, Nora.” He pressed her body against the folding screen to his right with a feverish motion; the screen clattered against the wall, barely remaining upright. “You’re making me break all my rules here, and you know what? I don’t care!” He kissed her hungrily. “I just want to kiss you…be with you.” He paused to devour her lips again. “Do you?”
